It's become tradition around here to enter some creative work into the county fair each summer. We've done scrapbooking and woodworking. We've tried our hand at photography and vegetables, jams and jellies. We've even been known to enter the vegetable animals category a time or two. And, I don't mean to brag, but the Burtrams are usually good for a winning a ribbon or two at the Bedford County Fair each year, and this year was no exception.
You see, my friends, EVERYONE is indeed famous…in a small town.
This year was Sam's first year to enter something in the county fair, and he decided on a bug collection. Ten bugs, any kind, correctly labeled in a shadow box. Check. He caught is own bugs, we identified them together on the computer and momma pinned them into a shadow box. Not too bad for his first entry...
He turned his collection in to be judged...
…and continued Burtram tradition with earning a first place ribbon and a Grand Champion ribbon for his class on his very first entry into the county fair. Like mother, like son ;)
Momma, however, would have to settle for second place on that handwoven seat cushion for a chair.

My boy could not be more proud to be a GRAND CHAMPION (with arm muscle flex from Sam).

However, that enthusiasm faded in comparison to his new goal…
Next year, he wants his own cow to walk around the ring. According to Sam, he already knows how to do this: Get a cow and a string. Tie the string around the cow's nose. Pull him around the ring.
How hard can it be?

On a side note:
He also competed in the balloon pop and the bicycle race, taking second place in both. He boldly agreed to participate in the greased pig races as well, until the pig began squealing; then it was over. Abruptly. Tears. Wild eyes. Passing of terrified boy across the crowd. Swift walk to car. Game over.
I can't wait to see what next year holds for us at the county fair...
