Chuck-ER-Cheese

It was a beautiful day here, and we had lots of fun in store for us.  We had made plans to meet up with some special friends and play at Chuck-E-Cheese.  We borrowed Dad's car (for the extra seating), and loaded all the boys up for a little pizza and games.  After a 30 minute car ride, which evidently seems like hours to a 4 year old, the Burtram basketball team met up with the new Brown family of FOUR!

We played a few games before our food was ready.

We ate a little pizza, and most of the boys were off again playing games...
but not Cameron.  He's still eating.

Ethan is enjoying a game of Deal or No Deal.

Evan and Kayden are deer hunting.

And, Cameron is still eating.

He takes a short break to ride this ride.

All the while, Sam is smiling and watching from the stroller.

At one point, we spotted our friend Cian.  All we were missing was his mom, Becca.
Wish you could have been there to play with us Becca!

And, Cameron went back to eating.

It sure was great to finally meet this tiny tot!  We have been praying for you a long time, little Brodie, and we are so glad you are finally home with your forever family.
The Brown Family is even more special with you in it!

After an action-packed hour and a half at Chuck-E-Cheese, we loaded back up for home.  When I put Sam in his carseat, I sure thought he felt hot...too hot.  So, I decided to unload everyone when we got home, take Sam's temperature, and call the doctor.   By the time we got home, Sam's temperature was 102.5, not good.  I called the doctor; he's out of town.  We were told to go to the ER with a temp that high.  So, I put Sam back in the car, Ethan asked to come too, and off the three of us went.

No waiting, so we went straight to triage where Sam was still smiling, laughing at Ethan, and showing off all his new tricks to the nurses...just with a temp of 102.9 now.  They took us straight back to the observation room where the doctor gave him an elephant dose of Motrin to break the fever and requested bloodwork.  I should add that four nurses have stopped by our room by now to play with Sam.  The bloodwork nurse, Deborah, was so great.  40 years of experience really pays off.  She did say she had a little trouble spotting a good vein to draw blood from because of all those rolls on his arm! :)

Needless to say, Sam was not a fan AT ALL of drawing blood, but I had a bottle ready and Ethan pulled out all the stops on distractions.  Funny dancing, peek-a-boo, the karate chop game, he did it all for the sake of a smile from Sam.  Turns out Sam had a really bad ear infection that had gone undetected for a while.  Sam's just not a complainer, so it's hard to know something is wrong with this happy baby.  The doctor decided to give him 2 shots to jumpstart his system and strong antibiotics to fight the infection.  More needles, more crying, more dancing, peek-a-boo, and karate chop game.

We had to stay an hour after the shots for observation and ensure no allergic reactions to the meds.  Again, Ethan played and laughed and distracted Sam.  Finally, Sam had gotten so tired he fell asleep in my arms, but since he was still sooo hot, I couldn't hold him long and I decided to lay him down on the bed.  And who crawls right in the bed with him??? His big brother Ethan.

I couldn't have been more grateful for Ethan today.  He brushed little teeth and hair, he changed diapers and tied shoes, held little hands through parking lots.  He helped cash in tickets for prizes. He buckled carseats.  He chose to go with me to the ER.  He eased the tension of a scary experience for this first-time momma.  He's a really special kid with a sevants heart.  His compassion is extroadinary, and today, he was my hero.

What's He Doing? Wednesday

In just one second, the time it takes to walk two steps backward and pick
up a pair of jeans from his closet, I turn back around and find this...

Someone thinks it's pretty fun to saddle up on the changing table
and pretend to ride on it...and that someone isn't me.

Thankfully, HE is the Father

Precious is the promise of my heavenly Father.  God chose the role of "father" in the story of humanity and sees me as his child.  He loves everyone, but just like I love my own children a bit more, so does he...and I am His.  God also chooses our parents, our mothers and fathers.  And, whatever deficits we perceive in our mothers and fathers, God can fill.  (I take so much comfort in this truth, seeing as I am really shaping up to be a real mom-of-the-year here, but this post isn't about me...)

I also have the privilege of having several godly men, fathers, in my life.  Men of God make a difference.  A father imparts to his family a vision that directs his own life.  If a dad loves the Lord with his whole heart, his children will too.  (yet another truth I lean on since I have three young men of God to raise up)

I thank the Lord for my father, my husband, and many other great men in my life.  I am grateful for you.

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.  Ephesians 3:14-15

And now, some photos of Father's Day 2011:

Sam Snapshot: 8 months

We are two weeks into summer break and little Sam is officially 8 months old (on his sister's birthday.)  This has been a very eventful month in the Burtram house for sure.  I look forward to the rest of the summer and all the new tricks I will get to see Sam accomplish while I am home.  Here's a running list of  common practices at our house these days:
  • He held his first cicada. (and last for another 13 years, they are gone now)
  • He got his first tooth and then a second one week later.
  • He began crawling everywhere!
  • He can pull up and cruise around the furniture.
  • He went swimming in the river at CedarRock (or at least dipped his toes; the water was cold)
  • He speaks all kinds of jibberish words.
  • He lets me rock him to sleep (I'm gonna have a cuddler yet!)
  • He bangs his toys together over. and over. and over.
  • He can clap his hands when you sing to him.
  • He can play peek-a-boo and will chase us around every corner of the house.
  • He reaches for me when he wants me to pick him up.
  • He has a strange attraction to ostrich eggs.
  • He can stand up in his bed, and he grabs the rails and shakes them.  I can almost hear him saying, "Get me out of jail!"
As for some 8 month old pictures, here's a few I took today while we got the baby pool out.
 (Thanks Nani, we love it!)

And, how does a super mom know when water fun is over????

Goose Egg

Deja vu' at its worst...

Last summer I kept Kayden and Cameron at my house while I was out for summer break.  About a week or so into the summer, I went to the restroom (literally gone for about a minute) and heard this strange "bump-thud."  I knew it wasn't good as soon as I heard it...then came the crying.  Kayden had decided Cameron wanted to sit on the couch, and since he was only 9 months old at the time, he of course crawled right off the couch, head first.  Big goose egg, I mean big.  I called his mom, my mom, the pediatrician, the works.  He ended up being okay, and Kayden was never to lift him again...

Fast-forward to today, one summer later, and we have added Sam to the lineup for a total of 5 boys in the house all summer.  Some are swimming with friends, one is napping, and I am down to just Kayden and Sam.  I run to the bathroom for just a second and hear a familiar "bump-thud," run like mad, pulling pants up along the way, to find a familiar scene.  Just like before, Kayden put Sam up on the couch, and of course he crawled off, head first, and looked like this:

Awesome.  Kayden is on baby restriction FOREVER, and I'm never going to the bathroom again.

Sharp Tooth

Sharp tooth of my past...

Meet "sharp tooth" of my present and future!

Last week (May 22nd to be exact), Sam cut his first tooth, and yep, that baby is sharp!  One week later, to the day, we said hello to #2.  He has been pretty good so far through the teething process.  It's all happening so fast really.  Oh, and he started crawling last week too (same day he cut a tooth).  I just looked down and he was moving across the carpet in pursuit of the remote. Nani was here to see the show.  My boy understands technology is the way of the future...or he wants control of the remote.

The Canoe Curse is Lifted

We have a bit of a curse that has plagued my family for many years.  On Memorial Day weekend, we traditionally get together for a canoe trip down the Duck River followed by a cookout.  We have never, yes I said NEVER, completed a canoe trip without someone flipping their boat.  Usually, you can count on Amanda to be the boat-flipper, however there has been a year that I have worn that hat as well.  This year, we all made it without any capsized canoes!  Hooray!  The curse is lifted!  Here are some photos to capture the fun...

Cameron, Kayden, Scout and Piper

Kimmie stayed with all the kiddos while the adults went canoeing.

Cameron hangs from the rafters of the barn.

And, Keith rode the newest member of the
CedarRock Fall Fest family to the cookout.

Sam met Gran and Poppy for lunch.

...and preferred airplane swinging to canoeing.

They made it all the way across to the island and back, hand in hand.

Getting all three boys to look at the camera and smile
at the same time is IMPOSSIBLE.
